Pertamina Group Synergy Produces SAF from Used Cooking Oil

PT Pertamina (Persero) continues to accelerate green energy production to strengthen national energy security.

Pertamina President Commissioner Mochamad Iriawan, on the sidelines of the SAF First Lifting at the Pertamina Cilacap Refinery on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, confirmed that Pertamina has successfully processed used cooking oil (UCO) into the environmentally friendly energy feedstock for SAF. "This is an extraordinary work of the nation's people, proving that we are capable of making major breakthroughs. Pertamina is capable of becoming a pioneer in Southeast Asia," Iriawan explained.

This used cooking oil-based SAF represents a significant milestone in supporting green energy development and accelerating national energy security. The UCO SAF production process utilizes the Merah Putih catalyst, also a joint formulation between Pertamina and the Bandung Institute of Technology. The resulting SAF meets international standards ASTM D1655 and DefStan 91-091, making Pertamina SAF the first officially certified product in Southeast Asia.

Pertamina has also successfully initiated and explored the entire SAF ecosystem that has been certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) from upstream to downstream.

Pertamina Deputy President Director Oki Muraza said that SAF production represents an important step in supporting global decarbonization targets and the national commitment towards NZE 2060.

As Pertamina's contribution to the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, Pertamina has prepared around 32 kiloliters of Pertamina SAF made from used cooking oil on one of Pelita Air's flights in mid-August.
