Würth Elektronik and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) have signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement to promote development and production in Hong Kong. Around 100 start-ups and Small and Midsized Enterprizes (SMEs) in the field of microelectronics, as well as Hong Kong's entire production ecosystem, will benefit from local development support, knowledge transfer, and partner network of the well-known component manufacturer.
Founded in 2001, HKSTP is a government-backed organization in Hong Kong that promotes innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship, specific to start-ups and SMEs, in an effort to strengthen its production location and establish Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology center.
As part of the Würth Group, Würth Elektronik eiSos builds its strategy and corporate success on the claim “creating together.” The focus is on development support through knowledge transfer, personal connection, local presence, and long-term customer relationships. The experts at Würth Elektronik listen carefully to the developers, analyze their problems, and make tangible, practice-oriented proposals for solutions; thus turning an idea into a marketable product, and a start-up into a successful customer and partner.
The broad spectrum of development support ranges from free component samples, design-in support and EMC tests, to contacts to a large EMS partner network that helps with scaling production. This support can only possible with local presence, which is why Würth Elektronik has also maintained a Technical Service Center in the Hong Kong Science Park since 2024.
Over the next three years, the HKSTP InnoPark site will benefit from development support measures, such as those implemented by Würth Elektronik at many locations around the world, to make innovation possible.
Support program for electronics innovation
The New Engineering Service Program supports up to 100 start-ups in component selection and circuit optimization. A prototyping project at the HKSTP Proshop facility, with up to 20 participants, is also supported. Further joint activities are also planned, such as a roadshow with start-ups or technology companies. Local schools and universities will benefit from training courses, workshops, and seminars.
Mr. Thomas Garz, CEO of Würth Elektronik eiSos Group, said “Being the leading electronic components manufacturer, we see the opportunity in Hong Kong. With the global experience in the industry, we utilize the global expertise to help the local market on developing the innovation and technology projects. As an enabler in the whole product life cycle from development to production and then to market, we offer the More Than You Expect experience in the product development journey. Partnering with HKSTP to facilitate the R&D and advanced manufacturing for companies in this ecosystem will further boost up the synergy to contribute the innovation development in Hong Kong."
More than just a component manufacturer
Mr. Alexander Gerfer, CTO of the Würth Elektronik eiSos Group said “From my own experience, I know how long and winding the road from idea to marketable product can be, especially when it comes to innovations in microelectronics. We at Würth Elektronik are far more than just a component manufacturer. In line with our claim “creating together,” we support our future customers today with a comprehensive program that ranges from free component samples and comprehensive development support to advice on series production and sales.”
Würth Elektronik: a key enabler
Albert Wong, CEO of HKSTP, said “Würth Elektronik has been a key enabler of HKSTP’s I&T ecosystem. We are delighted with their strengthened commitment towards Hong Kong’s microelectronics and advanced manufacturing development – a driving force in our ecosystem’s prospects and the potential of our innovative talent. This collaboration will create a substantial impact on our community of 270 microelectronics related companies while delivering strategic value for Würth Elektronik, ultimately catalyzing Hong Kong’s agenda in advanced manufacturing and new industrialization.”
