The Ho Chi Minh City metro is officially inaugurated

On 9 March 2025, line 1 of the Ho Chi Minh City metro was inaugurated. This was a further demonstration of SYSTRA's expertise in designing the elevated sections of the line.

The inauguration of the Bên Thành – Suôi Tiên metro line was attended by Vietnamese and Japanese officials, who provided the funding. This is the first metro line for Vietnam’s economic capital, two months after its opening on 22 December 2024.

With a length of 19.7km and 14 stations, line 1 of the Ho Chi Minh City metro is a concrete solution to reduce urban congestion and cut polluting emissions from transport. It links the Bên Thành market area in the 1st district and the Suôi Tiên theme park in the town of Thu Duc, in the north-west of the city.

Over a decade of commitment for SYSTRA
To build this line, SYSTRA worked for 12 years with the Japanese company Sumitomo and the Korean constructor GS, with a multinational team of experts responsible for designing the structures, coordinating with the client, and overseeing the project through to commissioning. Teams from Vietnam, France, Korea and India worked together to design all the plans for the engineering structures, comprising 17km of U-shaped viaducts and 11 elevated stations.

SYSTRA was also responsible for each phase of the project, including execution studies, project management, coordination with the client and supervision of the project through to commissioning. Users have already embraced this new mode of transport, with an average of more than 75,000 passengers per day.

Serving mobility projects in Vietnam
The inauguration of the Ho Chi Minh City metro comes just a few months after the inauguration of line 3 of the Hanoi metro, another line designed by SYSTRA in Vietnam. With projects carried out in Vietnam since 1990, SYSTRA has more than three decades of experience in the development of transport, whether it be for the creation of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) or metro lines, or for the modernisation of rail network infrastructure and systems. Our teams are currently acting as project managers for the underground extension of line 3 of the Hanoi metro, for which tunnelling began in 2024.
