Fugro Launches India's First Carbon Capture and Storage Project

Fugro has embarked on its first Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in India, partnering with Eco Carbon Engineering Solutions Limited which in association with Visakha Pharma City Limited, and the Environmental Geotechnology Laboratory, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay (Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay). This initiative aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions from a pharmaceutical plant in the Pharmaceutical Estate in Visakhapatnam by capturing CO2 and storing it deep inside the subsurface.

Carbon capture and storage involve capturing CO2 emissions from industrial processes and either storing them underground or repurposing them for other uses. Fugro's role in this project includes leveraging its extensive experience in geotechnical, geological mapping and geoconsulting to ensure the project's success. This aligns with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and promote sustainable practices.

This collaboration highlights the combined efforts to tackle climate change through innovative solutions and Fugro's global expertise will be instrumental in navigating the challenges of this local project. The company's experience in large-scale environmental initiatives will ensure that the project meets the highest standards of safety and efficacy. As part of its 'Towards Full Potential' strategy, Fugro provides solutions for carbon capture, storage, and utilisation projects.

Fugro is responsible for conducting the initial studies to determine the area's suitability for carbon capture and storage. This project begins with a comprehensive desktop study to assess the feasibility of creating a carbon capture and storage site in Visakhapatnam. This will be followed by laboratory tests to ensure the safety and feasibility of CO2 injection. Fugro's geoconsulting team in India will lead this effort, supported by IIT Bombay’s research and development expertise. "We see the value that capturing and storing CO2 holds for the future and we look forward to supporting more clients in their CCS journey, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable Earth.” said Soumendra Ganguly, Country Manager, Fugro, India.
