More than just a router: Fully modular MRX routers from INSYS icom now come with LXC-based icom SmartBox
Regensburg – The new operating system version 2.0 for fully modular MRX router series from INSYS icom now provides the devices with a fully-fledged embedded Linux environment. Scripts and programs can be run and data can be collected and processed without affecting the functionality of the router in this closed-off "icom SmartBox" system, which handles such operations completely independent of the router OS and its configuration. INSYS icom thus offers users an economic and efficient way to program and execute a wide range of M2M or IoT applications directly on the MRX routers (Edge Computing).
Figure: The new operating system version 2.0 for fully modular MRX router series from INSYS icom now provides the devices with “icom SmartBox”: a fully-fledged LXC-based embedded Linux environmentThe icom SmartBox is an enhancement of the INSYS sandbox for INSYS devices that has already been available. The icom SmartBox achieves a better performance and higher flexibility and enables a greater number of applications to be run at the same time. It is based on Linux containers (LXC) that provide completely separate environments for independent applications. Each container has its own IP and MAC address and can be addressed directly as a kind of virtual device within the same physical router. Direct communications between individual containers are also possible, thus allowing for different applications to draw on each other. The number of Linux-based containers is only limited by the available random access memory and mass storage. The communication parameters for each container can be configured via the icom OS or via command line directly from the application. Container encryption is also possible. The icom SmartBox is now available for all MRX routers and is included in the firmware “icom OS” v. 2.0 and can be downloaded at www.insys-icom.com/firmware.
INSYS icom helps customers migrate INSYS sandbox applications to the icom SmartBox, offers to create custom applications for both the icom SmartBox and INSYS sandbox and provides training courses for operating both Linux environments. Further information is available at www.insys-icom.com/SmartBox.
