Mitsubishi Electric India has inaugurated a new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility in Chennai, marking a major expansion of its manufacturing footprint in the country. The facility was virtually inaugurated by M. K. Stalin, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, in the presence of senior government and diplomatic representatives.
Developed with an investment of approximately ₹2,100 crore, the new plant spans 210,000 square metres and has an annual capacity of 300,000 indoor and outdoor room air conditioners and 650,000 compressor units. The project is expected to generate more than 2,100 direct and indirect jobs, while strengthening the regional supplier base through increased local sourcing and skills development.
The Chennai facility represents Mitsubishi Electric India’s second manufacturing plant in India within two years, following the launch of its Factory Automation Systems facility in Pune in 2023. It is a key milestone in the company’s 15-year presence in India and aligns closely with the Government of India’s Make in India initiative, reducing reliance on imported HVAC components and supporting a more self-reliant domestic manufacturing ecosystem.
Designed to meet India’s evolving energy efficiency and sustainability standards, the locally manufactured air conditioners and compressors will help lower energy consumption amid rising cooling demand. The plant incorporates Mitsubishi Electric’s global manufacturing principles and advanced Japanese technologies, including data-driven and digitally enabled production processes for real-time monitoring, precision manufacturing, and consistent quality control.
Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted Chennai’s role as a manufacturing hub and reaffirmed Tamil Nadu’s commitment to enabling sustainable industrial growth. Atsushi Takase, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Electric India, noted that the facility will allow the company to respond faster to market needs, enhance quality control, and position India as a core hub within Mitsubishi Electric’s global air conditioning business.
With a strong focus on responsible manufacturing, resource efficiency, and workplace safety, the new Chennai plant underscores Mitsubishi Electric India’s long-term commitment to sustainable growth, localisation, and high-value manufacturing in India.
