Pertamina, Hyundai, and West Java Province Develop Waste to Hydrogen in Bandung

Pertamina, Hyundai Motor Group, and West Java Province announced a collaboration to establish a waste-to-hydrogen (W2H) ecosystem in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.

The collaboration, aimed at unlocking the potential of low-carbon hydrogen production from waste landfills in Sarimukti, will transport the hydrogen to a hydrogen refuelling station using Pertamina’s existing compressed natural gas (CNG) station, targeting operational launch by 2027.

Director of Strategy, Portfolio and New Ventures Pertamina, A. Salyadi D Saputra stated that the clean hydrogen, sourced by biogas generated at the Sarimukti landfill near Bandung, West Java, will be supplied to the CNG station.

“Alongside Hyundai Motor Group and West Java Government, Pertamina will develop this pioneering project through a strong collaboration. This partnership will provide benefits in order to achieve self-sufficiency, energy movement and creating job opportunities,” said Salyadi.

The collaboration is Pertamina’s effort to fulfil its commitment to accelerate the energy transition and achieve the Net Zero Emission target by 2060 or sooner, which is in line with the Company's long-term target, one of which is the development of low-carbon business technology.

Hyundai Motor Group will accelerate this initiative by bringing its modular reforming technology and hydrogen refuelling station. Along with it, Hyundai will also develop hydrogen vehicles in Indonesia.

As part of this collaboration to build a waste-to-hydrogen ecosystem, Pertamina, Hyundai Motor, and the West Java Provincial Government will undertake projects focused on emission reduction, waste-to-energy conversion, and hydrogen mobility ecosystem development. These initiatives are also aligned with Indonesia’s National Hydrogen and Ammonia Roadmap (RHAN).

In the long run, these projects have the potential to penetrate the hydrogen market, which is in line with Pertamina's ongoing efforts to promote the utilisation of clean energy and sustainability.

The development of the hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia is expected to be accelerated through this collaboration, and the projects will be on stream in 2029.

Three Pertamina Sub-holdings will be involved in implementing the projects: Pertamina Power Indonesia, PGN, and Pertamina Patra Niaga, each contributing according to their respective core business areas.
