TOSHIBA IS BRINGING CARBON-NEUTRAL TECHNOLOGIES TO THE COP29 JAPAN PAVILION VIRTUAL SHOWCASE

Toshiba Corporation and Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation will participate in the Japan Pavilion’s virtual showcase, organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan (“MOEJ”), during the 29th Conference of the Parties (“COP29”) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The event will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 - 22, with the virtual showcase running from October 11 to late December.

At COP29, the MOE will host the Japan Pavilion, showcasing Japan's cutting-edge products, services, and efforts to combat climate change to a global audience. The pavilion will feature both an on-site and a virtual showcase. Toshiba and Toshiba ESS will participate in the virtual showcase, presenting two energy solutions—SCiB™ and AEROXIA™—which were selected by the MOEJ as key technologies contributing to carbon neutrality. These solutions will be introduced through video content.

Under the corporate philosophy of "Committed to People, Committed to the Future," Toshiba Group is dedicated to addressing current and future environmental challenges through its business activities, contributing to solving societal issues and promoting sustainable growth. Addressing climate change has been identified as one of Toshiba Group's materialities. By leveraging advanced technologies, including SCiB™ and AEROXIA™, Toshiba Group is committed to contributing to the realization of carbon neutrality, a circular economy, and nature positive outcomes.

Showcase Highlights:
1. SCiB™ Optimizes Battery Systems from a Product Lifecycle Perspective
The SCiB™, Toshiba’s lithium-ion rechargeable battery, offers performance characteristics that overcome challenges for conventional batteries. These include a long life of over 20,000 charge and discharge cycles, rapid charging, high input and output performance, excellent low-temperature performance, and a wide state-of-charge range, all while maintaining a high level of safety. The SCiB™ is widely used in applications ranging from mobility to energy storage systems.

The excellent performance of the SCiB™ supports an extended lifetime, which contributes to lower consumption of limited resources such as lithium and reduces the total cost throughout the lifecycle of battery systems. The effects lead to co-benefits, supporting a circular economy and fostering nature positive.

The high input and output performance of the SCiB™ also makes it ideal for energy storage systems used for frequency regulation to stabilize electric power grids, and for off-grid power supplies in remote areas such as islands. By supporting the introduction of renewable energy and reducing partial load operation of existing diesel generators, the SCiB™ helps to further reduce CO2 emissions.

In addition, the long-life characteristic of the battery allows for the repurposing of used batteries originally deployed in mobility applications for energy storage purposes.

AEROXIA™: A Natural Origin Gas-Based SF6 Alternative Solution for Power Grids
Substations that ensure the stable supply of electricity use various devices, such as Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), transformers, and surge arresters, to protect power infrastructure from events like lightning strikes. GIS has traditionally used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas, which is chemically stable and offers excellent electrical insulation and current interruption capabilities. SF6 has significantly contributed to compact designs and reduced maintenance requirements for power equipment.

However, when released into the atmosphere, SF6 is over 20,000 times more potent than CO2 in its greenhouse effect. To mitigate these environmental concerns, measures are taken to prevent SF6 leakage during use, while legislative efforts in regions like Europe and some U.S. states are advancing toward banning its use as part of climate change countermeasures.

Toshiba ESS focuses on product concepts that prioritize safety, reduce environmental risks, and enhance user-friendliness. To address these concerns, Toshiba ESS has introduced AEROXIA™, an SF6 alternative solution for power equipment that eliminates the use of artificial gases such as SF6 and fluorinated gases. Instead, AEROXIA™ uses only gases found naturally in the atmosphere. The product lineup continues to expand, offering environmentally friendly, low-maintenance solutions that align with Toshiba's commitment to environmental harmony.
