PERTAMINA: JAWA-1 PLTGU, THE LARGEST IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, IS READY TO OPERATE
Indonesia will officially have the largest integrated power plant in Southeast Asia equipped with a regasification system.
The Jawa-1 Combined Cycle Power Plant (PLTGU) with a capacity of 1760 MW is ready for operation after undergoing a series of tests such as plant reliability run & net dependable capacity test precisely on Friday (29/3). With these completed processes, Indonesia will officially have the largest integrated power plant in Southeast Asia equipped with a regasification system.
The Jawa-1 PLTGU is managed by PT Jawa Satu Power (JSP), owned by a consortium consisting of Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) with 40 percent ownership, Marubeni with 40 percent, and Sojitz with 20 percent. In this important moment, the CEO of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, expressed his tremendous appreciation to all levels of management and officers of JSP for their dedication and extraordinary hard work in completing this mega project.
Jawa-1 PLTGU is a power plant that integrates a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with a 1760 MW capacity power generation unit consisting of two power units, each with a capacity of 880 MW. Unit 2 has been in commercial operation since December 2023. This project connects gas supply availability in Papua with electricity needs in Java and the Bali Islands.
The project has several advantages, including greater efficiency by utilizing the latest generation single shaft combined cycle gas turbine technology, making the electricity selling price competitive. Operationally, this power plant has black start capability technology, enabling it to self-start when the grid is not available for imported power for start-up purposes.
By using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel source, the greenhouse gas emissions produced are lower compared to coal or oil-fired power plants. It follows efforts to reduce carbon emissions from the electricity sector. Furthermore, this power plant utilizes closed-loop cooling tower technology, which improves reliability by reducing the volume of seawater used to support plant operations.
The Jawa-1 PLTGU operation will be a significant achievement for Pertamina and will also add to the portfolio of clean energy utilization in Pertamina's business. Natural gas plays a very strategic role in the energy transition period, where it will support national energy security, and its low emissions place it in the clean energy category.
