"Interoperability" as a current trend in technology: two medical devices - one user interface

At the Medica this year, the steute business division Meditec will be demonstrating how in the (near) future medical devices and user interfaces will be networked in the OR. As a practical example, two medical devices - an ultrasonic dissector and a surgical microscope - can be activated by a single foot control.

This means: control systems in the OR will become "interoperable". The prerequisite for this is a joint communication standard, currently being developed by 69 companies and research institutes within the network OR.NET. As an associated OR.NET partner, steute Meditec is involved in the creation of user interface profiles for network-compatible medical devices.

In the practical example demonstrated at the steute booth, both the two medical devices and the user interface are already fully functioning, so visitors can witness the advantages of interoperability "live".

The interoperable user interface is based on the foot control used for the surgical microscope (see photo). In addition to key zoom and focus functions, it is equipped with a joystick for fine positioning of the microscope, as well as six further control elements, giving the user control over a total of fourteen microscope functions. Via a touchscreen the same system can be switched over to control the ultrasonic dissector. The result: control complexity is considerably reduced and the surgeon, who alternately uses the dissector and the microscope, does not have to keep adjusting between two different user interfaces.
