The pulp and paper industry: BUTTING accompanies gigantic conversion project
BUTTING Anlagenbau in Schwedt received a major order for the "O750 Oulu" project from Stora Enso in June.
At the Oulu site in northern Finland, the former PM6 paper machine is being converted into a modern, high-performance production line for packaging board. The aim is for this to become the largest machine of its kind in Europe. After completion, the annual production volume is expected to be around 750,000 tonnes of the high-quality coated primary fibre board with a white or brown reverse side (FBB, CKB)[1]. The rebuilt plant is expected to start production in early 2025.
For this project, BUTTING in Schwedt received the order for 128 container positions for the BCTMP and BM6 areas. These include process and storage tanks with volumes of up to 700 m³, which are manufactured, delivered, and assembled on site.
In the field of pipeline construction, BUTTING is responsible for the piping of the pulp preparation system. Here, more than 23 km of pipelines in the nominal diameter range of DN 15 to DN 1,000 are to be laid. The total tonnage for container and pipeline construction currently amounts to over 1,000 tonnes of stainless steel, including primary and secondary supports.
"The challenge for us is the narrow time frame for assembly. Container construction will start as early as August this year, with pipeline construction following shortly afterwards in October. From today's perspective, a total of at least 100 fitters will be employed on site by September 2024," explain Marko Busse and Mario Kulow, both managing directors of BUTTING Anlagenbau. "We are delighted to be part of this huge project. Together with our team, we gladly accept the challenge. This will give us another chance to demonstrate our capabilities in Europe's pulp and paper industry."
