Great Wall Motor Shows Its Vision, Underlines Its xEV Leadership and Reaffirms Its Commitment to Help Drive Thailand’s Vision to Become ASEAN’s EV Production Hub
Great Wall Motor (GWM) showed its global vision and underscored its endeavor to be the xEV Leader in Thailand at “ZEV Thailand Policy: Road to EV ASEAN Production Hub” seminar.
Together with leading industry peers and government agencies, GWM shared its perspectives and suggested approaches to next-generation auto industry development that will establish Thailand as the hub of ASEAN’s electric vehicle sector. This year’s seminar was held as a virtual event by Thailand Board of Investment in collaboration with Thai Subcontracting Promotion Association and Informa Markets.
The market’s confidence in GWM’s xEV leadership in Thailand is building up consistently. Most recently, the company was represented by Khanchit Chaisupho, Vice President of External & Government Affairs at Great Wall Motor Thailand, as a guest speaker to share GWM’s vision and recommendations on “Game-changing Future Directions of Thailand’s Future Mobility” at virtual seminar “ZEV Thailand Policy: Road to EV ASEAN Production Hub” that attracted a lot of online attendees.
Khanchit Chaisupho, Vice President of External & Government Affairs, Great Wall Motor Thailand, said, “Thailand is recognized as one of the world’s best automobile production hubs. With a policy to promote Thailand as ASEAN’s EV production hub, the Thai government is rolling out measures to drive the industry’s transition towards zero emission with a target to increase the share of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) to 30% of total domestic vehicle production by 2030. Thispolicy coincides with the key strategy that shaped GWM’s investment in Thai production and business operations—to help upgrade the country’s production capability and bring new energy technology to the market, which will enable Thai people and automotive industry to enjoy more sustainable and eco-friendly future while contributing to next-gen auto industry development in Thailand.”
In addition to its full-scale production facilities in Thailand and other key locations across the world, GWM has built a network of ten R&D centers in seven countries worldwide. For years, this global R&D network has been playing a key role in the development of new energy technologies, bringing them to production of new energy vehicles across hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, battery electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles to help vitalize the global electric vehicle sector. It is also instrumental to the development of GWM Electrification Technology that encompasses three core components: battery, electric motor and electronic control system.
By combining especially designed modules, the battery becomes lighter, more compact and yet delivers high performance with low energy consumption and long-lasting power supply. GWM Electrification Technology consumes only 12.5 kW per 100 kilometers of driving distance, which gives its electric vehicles up to 600 kilometers of electric range per one full charge.
GWM has also developed a new platform for xEVs. Called GWM LEMON, it is a global intelligent modular technology platform that boasts five unique advantages: lightweight, electrification, multi-purpose, omni-protection and network. GWM LEMON is natively adaptive to powertrain solutions across internal combustion engine (ICE); dual hybrid transmission including P2, P2+ and P4; battery electric vehicle (BEV); and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).
GWM previously announced its roadmap to rise as a global brand by 2025, which included a strategic goal to drive its global vehicle sales to 4 million units. New energy vehicles will account for 80% of the total volume in a bid to bring more intelligent, safer and greener technologies to global consumers. In Thailand, GWM plans to launch its first BEV to the Thai market this year with introduction of ORA Good Cat, a favorite model from its BEV brand ORA. From 2023 onwards, GWM Thailand will start multi-model production of long-range BEVs for the domestic market and export. The company is also ready to add more types of electric vehicles to its future product lineup for Thai consumers and Southeast Asian markets with customer-centric approach. This is to ensure that the consumers will have access to a wide variety of xEV models from GWM that are equipped advanced technology and the ability to provide safe, worry-free driving with longer driving range and pleasurable ride on all journeys at value prices.
During the virtual seminar, Mr. Khanchit suggested ideas and measures to drive the Thai automotive industry towards ZEV production: “To make the ZEV sector alive and kicking in Thailand, we need multi-sectoral collaboration, know-how development, adoption of new production technologies and demand-supply creation. That is to build a well-rounded ecosystem of next-generation automotive industry while keeping the entire supply chain growing efficiently. In addition, the success will depend on favorable government policies such as subsidy and incentive schemes that will persuade people to switch to electric vehicles, as well as efforts of private sector to boost the demand by making these vehicles friendly to the users, such as by making it easy and convenient for car owners to search and gain access to charging stations, or by educating the public about long-term advantage of electric vehicles on the environment.”
As the “Global Mobility Technology Company”, GWM Thailand is pleased and ready to support government policies and industry stakeholders while playing its part to drive long-term development of next-generation electric vehicle sector in Thailand. In addition to setting up its production base and smart factory in Thailand, GWM brings its latest automobile production expertise and capability to the country, including cutting-edge electric vehicle technology, innovations and investment in R&D with international standards for application to the Thai market and ASEAN. The company also supports knowledge, skills and capability development of its Thai workforce and adheres to creation of the most advanced, most eco-friendly manufacturing operation to drive growth of the electric vehicle sector and contribute to sustainable growth of the Thai economy.
