Polyolefin Elastomer Purification System for Industrial Polymer Manufacturing

Sulzer and BeyondPoly have implemented an industrial devolatilization system at a 100,000-ton-per-year polyolefin elastomer production facility in China. The installation provides the critical purification stage required for technical elastomers used in photovoltaic encapsulation, electric vehicle components, and energy storage hardware.

Operational Requirements and Partner Responsibilities
Polyolefin elastomer (POE) synthesis requires the systematic extraction of unreacted monomers and volatile organic compounds from the molten polymer matrix. Without effective separation, volatile residues degrade optical clarity, reduce mechanical durability, and impair insulation properties.

BeyondPoly engineered and commissioned the manufacturing plant to expand domestic supply for industrial applications requiring high light transmittance and environmental resistance. Sulzer Chemtech provided process engineering, system design, and the proprietary DEVO devolatilization equipment. Following mechanical installation, engineering teams from both companies executed commissioning, baseline calibration, and continuous throughput testing to validate output parameters before formal acceptance.

Technical Mechanism and System Architecture
The separation process relies on controlled temperature and vacuum profiles inside the devolatilization vessel to separate low-molecular-weight volatiles without thermal degradation of the elastomer chains. The technology removes residual hydrocarbons while maintaining uniform melt viscosity. This configuration achieves low volatile organic compound levels at lower energy consumption compared to conventional multi-stage stripping systems, ensuring stable polymer flow for downstream pelletizing.

Industrial Applications and Operational Performance
POE material produced by this facility serves manufacturing sectors subject to strict reliability standards. Primary applications include encapsulation films for photovoltaic modules, flexible cable jackets, and automotive components exposed to thermal cycling and mechanical stress. The devolatilization system enables continuous operational stability at the nominal design throughput of 100,000 tons per year, ensuring product consistency and process efficiency across continuous production runs.
