congatec has established a new subsidiary, congatec Asia Embedded Design Sdn. Bhd., in Penang, Malaysia, expanding its engineering and research footprint in Asia. The move anchors high-value embedded computing design, customisation, and technical support capabilities in Malaysia, aligned with the company’s global “local for local” strategy.
As part of the expansion, congatec has integrated an embedded engineering team of 23 specialists formerly based at Kontron Asia. The company plans to scale the Penang operation to approximately 70 employees over the medium term. The new centre strengthens regional R&D and technical support capacity, enabling faster development cycles, closer customer collaboration, and delivery of application-ready (aReady.) solutions for the Asia-Pacific market.
The Penang site will focus on the development and support of standard and customised embedded computing platforms, adhering to congatec’s “Designed in Germany” quality standards. Engineering activities include advanced x86-based solutions using Intel and AMD processors, as well as Computer-on-Modules (COMs) based on technologies from Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and NXP. The team will also expand congatec’s aReady. software and solution stacks.
By localising engineering, production support, and production engineering expertise within the region, congatec aims to reduce design-in cycles, lower non-recurring engineering costs, and improve customers’ time-to-market, total cost of ownership, and return on investment. The Penang centre additionally enables maintenance and support services to be delivered within customers’ local time zones.
The establishment of the Penang subsidiary reflects congatec’s strategy to place advanced embedded and edge computing capabilities closer to key electronics and semiconductor ecosystems, while building scalable regional R&D capacity to support next-generation industrial, medical, and automation applications across APAC.
